How do you feel about your birthday? I know for some it's your own personal holiday, as it should be. 🙂 And for others, it's a dreaded day. For the rest of you, you fall somewhere in the middle. For me, it used to be my own personal holiday. And, it was my birthday when I woke up so plan accordingly...not on your way home from work (Timothy). Haha I'm not that girl anymore. Thank goodness. I received some good advice from someone years ago that said maybe we should discuss how we want to be celebrated on special occasions instead of assuming the other one knew how we wanted to be celebrated. And we did. Turns out I just needed to know I was thought of and valued. I wanted to know that I mattered.
Many years later I have realized the person that I need to matter to is me. Now don't get me wrong, I want and appreciate being celebrated by my friends and especially my Honey. But in the last several years my birthday and other special days have been easier. I haven't felt the pressure to make it a big deal. I really treasure the quiet, reflective moments. Instead of a big performance I much prefer an intimate gathering with those closest to my heart with good food and easy conversation. And of course, a lot of laugh.
I encourage you to have this conversation with your loved ones if you haven't already. I think it's appropriate even for the little people in our lives. "How would you like to be celebrated?" You may be surprised at their response. And don't forget to share how you would like to be celebrated. Maybe you like surprises, maybe you really don't. That matters. And it's okay if the way you'd like to be celebrated changes. I'd be surprised if it didn't. Be sure to share those changes with your people. Never assume they know. They don't. It sets them up for failure and you for disappointment. That's not a fun way to spend your birthday or any special day.
