Keep Your Own Promises

I often talk about self-care as soft, soothing, the kind of thing that feeds your soul. But this week, self-care for me looked like sitting on hold with Tricare while we followed up on the referrals from my yearly physical. Asking lots of questions about providers and advocating for myself.

This was neither inspiring nor relaxing.

But it was necessary.

This was me keeping a promise to myself.

To be transparent, I practice self-care in many different ways. I do buy the flowers, soak in the tub, and dig in the dirt. But I also keep appointments and follow through on things that aren't glamorous.

Let’s be honest, it’s easy to procrastinate on the boring stuff. I have. We tell ourselves,

“I’ll schedule that.”

“I’ll ask about this.”

“I’ll deal with that next week.”

But in the long run, delay often leads to more issues to resolve. And ultimately more work–the kind I don’t enjoy.

Sometimes keeping promises is establishing routines and practices that stack together and create a natural rhythm.

I have a monthly therapy session. After my sessions, I go to a reflexology studio. Therapy gives me space to recognize and reframe. Reflexology gives me space to restore. This is my ritual. It’s not glamorous but it works for me.

Self-care is not either/or.

It is:

Administrative.

Emotional.

Physical.

Practical.

It’s reliability.

And reliability builds self-trust.

Where else do we break promises to ourselves?

Boundaries.

Rest.

Saying no.

Following through on goals.

Taking the class.

Leaving the room.

Keeping your promises isn’t about perfection. It’s about alignment.

Self-love isn’t always soft.

It isn’t always convenient.

It doesn't always feel good in the moment.

But over time?It builds steadiness.

It builds strength.

It builds trust.

I'd love to hear how you practice self-care. And, if this is an area that is new to you or one you are exploring further.

Have the best week and I'll be back here next week.

Much love,
