The Quiet Habit

She’s the one who checks in first.
The one who smooths over tension when something feels off.
The one who notices when someone else is quiet—and fills the space so no one has to sit in it too long.
No one asked her to do it
But she does.
I see this often in my coaching work.
She carries the emotional tone of the relationship. It’s up to her, or so she thinks, to ensure things are “good.” She monitors other people’s reactions and course corrects when needed. She keeps the connection alive.
She doesn’t talk about it.
And often, she isn’t even aware of it—until she is.
Sometimes it’s not just about who stays—
it’s about how much of the relationship you’ve been holding on your own.
Over time, it becomes exhausting. Even the self-care routines that once worked start to feel like they’ve run their course. And so, with a little courage, she reaches for a different perspective.
This is where something begins to shift.
She starts to recognize that what she has been carrying was never fully hers to hold.
Their feelings are theirs.
Their effort is theirs.
Their communication belongs to them.
And their growth—has always been their responsibility.

She begins to understand that care doesn’t require over-functioning.
Connection doesn’t require self-abandonment.
And maybe—
she can be present without being responsible for everything.
When she starts to set some of it down, something changes.
There is more energy.
Less resentment.
Less overthinking.
And her relationships begin to feel more honest.
Not overnight.
But then again—none of us got here overnight.
And this truth becomes clear:
Some relationships rebalance.
Some don’t.
Both tell you something.
Along the way, you stopped arguing with yourself.
You got clearer about who you are, what you want, and what matters most.
You begin to recognize who stays.
And now—
you’re learning not to over-carry what remains.
This is growth in action.
You don’t have to hold everything together to keep something meaningful.
And if something only works because you’re carrying all of it…
It may be time to set some of it down.
