When Motivation Fades but Intention Remains

We started off strong and determined but we often forget that there will be distractions. It’s common to feel a lull in energy now. But rest assured, this isn’t failure, it’s normal human rhythm.


Motivation comes and goes just like other emotions. We may need to activate it again to get it started, in the same way I have a ‘happy song’ playlist when I need to elevate my mood. 

So, let’s set the mood, the intention. 


Those distractions, while some of them are important, are still distractions from the intention you set for yourself. These demands compete for your attention. 


It’s okay to turn your attention to the other things that matter, and it’s also okay to return when you’re ready.


Let’s do this together. 

  • Let’s pause. 

  • Close our eyes.

  • Take a deep, cleansing breath.

(Repeat if necessary)


Now, let’s go back and evaluate the intentions you set at the beginning of the year. Do they still resonate and feel true to you? If not, it’s okay to start again with something that feels true now. 

Or, maybe you didn’t begin yet. That’s okay too. We can do it together. 


Don’t let disappointment or fear stop you from moving forward. Starting now is better than not starting at all. You deserve all that your intentions will bring. 


You might try this:

  • Do a brain-dump of all your ideas, goals, intentions, etc

  • Place them in categories of like items.

  • Now create the hierarchy of those ideas, which ones are action steps to achieving others?

  • Off all the ideas, what matters most right now?


That’s where we start. 


If this still feels overwhelming, let’s pause again and give yourself a moment to name the emotion(s). Does that emotion/feeling co-exist with your determination or commitment to move forward?



Sidenote- Be aware of your self-talk here. Practice kindness and remember that you are not alone. That many people struggle with following through with their intentions. You are in good company.

As you proceed, pause and re-evaluate when necessary. And feel free to reach out with questions if they arise. 


It’s important that you move forward in a way that honors yourself. We can each have different ways of proceeding. Only you can determine what that is, when that is, and how you will show up.
